How John’s Death Sets Up The Rest Of Yellowstone Season 5

There Is No One Stopping Beth & Jamie From Killing Each Other Now

John’s death effectively kickstarts the all-out war between Jamie and Beth in Yellowstone. It also kept the hope alive that somehow, they could be persuaded to move forward without trying to kill each other. Ahead of Yellowstone season 5, part 2’s return on Paramount Network, it was already confirmed that Costner will not be back as John Dutton III in the final episodes of the series. Losing the main lead of a show towards the end posed a major challenge to Sheridan. That said, addressing the Dutton patriarch’s fate early on allows the show to move forward, especially since there are still many loose ends that it needs to tackle. With John’s death now definitive, Yellowstone will no longer be bogged down by questions about his absence.

Is Yellowstone Season 5, Part 2 The End?

After more than a year, Yellowstone finally returns with season 5, part 2, in November 2024, but will this set of episodes be the show’s last outing?

Ultimately, Yellowstone didn’t have much of a choice with regard to how to write out John. There was no other justified reason why he would leave the ranch. As sad as this may be, killing Costner’s character is the best send-off that the series could have given him. What’s curious now is how his legacy will be preserved as the project moves forward.
